The Real Cost of Selling Online — What Nobody Tells You

Every cost between the sale price and your actual profit, explained honestly. Most new sellers are surprised by how many there are.

You sold a product for $29.99. Your supplier charged you $5. That's $24.99 profit, right?

No. Not even close.

The Cost Stack Nobody Warns You About

Here's what actually happens between a $29.99 sale and your real profit:

**Product cost (landed):** $5.00 FOB + $1.50 shipping + $0.80 duties = **$7.30** That $5 factory price was FOB (free on board) — it doesn't include getting the product to your warehouse. International shipping, customs duties, and any inspection fees are on you.

**Shipping to customer:** **$4.50-$8.00** Even "free shipping" stores pay for shipping — they absorb it into the price. Standard shipping for a 1-2 lb package in the US runs $4.50-$8.00 depending on carrier and zone.

**Transaction fees:** **$1.07** Shopify Payments charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. On a $29.99 sale: $0.87 + $0.30 = $1.17. Most payment processors are in this range.

**Packaging:** **$0.50-$1.50** Branded boxes, inserts, tissue paper, tape, shipping label. Even basic packaging costs something.

**Platform fees:** **$0.50-$2.00/order** Shopify subscription ($39-$399/month) divided by your order count. At 50 orders/month on the Basic plan, that's ~$0.80/order. Apps add more.

**Returns:** **$1.50-$3.00/order average** If 5-10% of orders are returned, and each return costs you $15-30 (return shipping + restocking + lost product), that averages to $1.50-$3.00 per order across all orders.

**Customer acquisition cost:** **$5.00-$15.00** This is what you spend on marketing per customer acquired. At a 2% conversion rate and $0.50 per click, you need 50 clicks per sale = $25 CAC. Most new stores are in the $8-15 range if their ads are working.

The Real Math

| Line item | Cost | |-----------|------| | Product (landed) | $7.30 | | Shipping to customer | $6.00 | | Transaction fees | $1.17 | | Packaging | $1.00 | | Platform fees | $0.80 | | Returns (avg) | $2.00 | | Customer acquisition | $10.00 | | **Total cost** | **$28.27** | | **Sale price** | **$29.99** | | **Actual profit** | **$1.72** |

That "75% margin" product makes you $1.72 per sale in this scenario. The product isn't unprofitable — but the margin is not what it looked like on paper.

How to Actually Make Money

The math above isn't a death sentence. It's a starting point for real planning:

**Reduce CAC:** Better targeting, better creative, better conversion rate. Going from $10 CAC to $6 CAC adds $4 to every sale.

**Increase AOV:** Bundles, multi-packs, upsells. Selling 2 units at $49.99 spreads your fixed costs across more revenue.

**Negotiate product cost:** Volume discounts, better payment terms, alternative suppliers.

**Optimize shipping:** Lighter packaging, negotiated carrier rates, regional fulfillment.

**Reduce returns:** Better product descriptions, better size guides, better images. Every return you prevent saves $15-30.

The Point

Know your numbers before you launch, not after. "Pre-freight margin" and "estimated margin" are planning tools. Your P&L statement is reality. Every assumption in your margin projection should be labeled — and checked against real data within 30 days of your first sales.
